Belize
In 1994, Dr. Lowman was the chief scientist in the canopy of the rain forests of Belize. Working at Blue Creek, she studied the herbivory (translation: plant-insect relationships) with over one million students as part of the Jason Project in Education. This expedition was initiated by Bob Ballard, founder of the Titanic, to "take" students to remote locations for field research via satellite technology. Lowman worked with students on a canopy walkway that she and her colleagues constructed for the broadcasts, and they explored different insects and plants in the treetops of this beautiful forest. This adventure is described in more detail in Lowman‘s book entitled Life in the Treetops (Yale Univ. Press, 1999).
